YES Abroad visiting Bitola
On March 25-26, the YES Abroad cohort visited the city of Bitola, in the south of N. Macedonia. Bitola is the second largest city in N. Macedonia. The highlight of Bitola is the Широк Сокак (Shirok Sokak- wide alley), a lively road filled with consulates, restaurants, and shops. The students enjoyed the language classes over coffee and sweets in one of Shirok Sokak's many cafes! They also explored the ancient site of Heraclea, dating back to the 4th century BC and founded by Philip II. Heraclea was a strategic and important station, and the site includes the ruins of a Roman bath and an amphitheater. Hiking was also on the agenda! The students visited Baba Mountain (fun fact: "Baba" means grandma in Macedonian!). This mountain is home to Pelister National Park- the first national park in N. Macedonia.
