Balkan Language Initiative students visited Gostivar

Gostivar is a city in North Macedonia, located in the upper Polog valley region. The name Gostivar – “City of guests” comes from the Slavic word “gosti” meaning "guests" and the Turkish word "dvar" meaning “castle” or “fort”. Typical multicultural environment, in which almost all nationalities in N. Macedonia live. Gostivar offers an unforgettable experience and mixed cultures taste.

On October 4, 2023, BLI students Benjamin Hiatt and Andrew Mairs together with their Macedonian language teacher went to Gostivar and visited the following sights and attractions:

Saat-Kula (Clock Tower) is one of the most famous and recognizable buildings in the city. By several clocks built into the Clock Tower, it is still in operation and shows the exact time.

The Bey Mahala Mosque was built in 1688 by Ebu Bekir. It's also known as the Clock mosque, due to the nearby Clock tower. The Clock mosque is a truly enriching experience.

Traditional Turkish-Albanian dishes were also at the menu, students get the chance to taste kachamak, trileche and baklava.

This is what Andrew had to say about this language trip:

“On Wednesday, we went to Gostivar by bus. The weather was wonderful. We ate delicious ice cream at the ice cream shop open that time. In the morning, we tried the specialty called kachamak. I must say, it is not my favorite food. Then, we went to Mosque in Gostivar. The name of the Mosque is Clock Tower Mosque. I met an interesting person. He sings Muslim prayers at the Mosque. We ate delicious baklava and trileche at the famous place called Rekord. We walked all day around the center of Gostivar with Mr. Elesa. We return from Gostivar by bus at the afternoon. I gave food to an old woman from the restaurant Kachamak.”

Whether you are fascinated by architecture, interested in learning about Ottoman history, or seeking a peaceful atmosphere, the iconic attractions in Gostivar will not disappoint you.
