YES Abroad Cohort Embarks on Mid-Year Retreat in Kumanovo, North Macedonia

From January 10th-12th, the YES Abroad cohort in North Macedonia embarked on a transformative mid-year orientation and retreat in the picturesque city of Kumanovo. This retreat provided students with a valuable opportunity to reflect on their experiences thus far, set goals for the remainder of their program, and strengthen bonds with fellow cohort members and American Councils (AC) staff.

During the retreat, students engaged in introspective sessions where they reflected on the challenges and successes they encountered during their time in North Macedonia. Through open discussions and shared experiences, they gained insights into their personal growth and development throughout the program.

In addition to these reflective activities, the cohort had the chance to explore the rich cultural heritage of Kumanovo and its surroundings. A highlight of the trip was a visit to the Kokino megalithic observatory, providing students with a fascinating glimpse into ancient astronomical practices. Furthermore, they had the opportunity to explore the 14th-century Church of St. George, immersing themselves in the history and spirituality of the region.

Of course, no trip to Kumanovo would be complete without indulging in the local cuisine. Students savored the flavors of traditional Macedonian dishes, tasting delicacies in the city center and its vicinity. These culinary experiences served as a delightful way to further immerse themselves in the culture of North Macedonia.
